Pakistan’s Medical Revolution: SIFC Launches National Medical Tourism Initiative

ISLAMABAD – In a transformative move for the nation’s healthcare economy, Pakistan has formally launched the National Medical Tourism Initiative. Driven by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the initiative aims to position Pakistan as a premier regional hub for high-quality, affordable reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries.
The landmark announcement was made during the 30th Annual International Conference of the Pakistan Association of Plastic Surgeons (PAPS). Despite regional challenges, the event stood as a testament to Pakistan’s growing surgical prowess, drawing over 400 delegates and a prestigious 12-member international faculty.
A Global Scientific Forum
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Abdul Khaliq Malik, Head of Plastic and Burn Surgery at Pims, the conference transitioned into a high-level scientific exchange. The curriculum bridged the gap between traditional reconstructive surgery and modern aesthetic trends:
- Advanced Research: A robust lineup of state-of-the-art lectures and research presentations.
- Live Workshops: Hands-on surgical demonstrations allowed residents to witness global techniques firsthand.
- Aesthetic Innovation: A dedicated track for non-invasive procedures, including Botox, fillers, and fat grafting, reflecting the booming global demand for aesthetic refinements.
The event featured global luminaries such as Prof. Dr. Eva Maria (Germany), President of ICOPLAST, and Prof. Nick Wilson John (UK), Chair of the BAPRAS Education Committee, alongside experts from China, Egypt, Türkiye, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia.
Strategic Governance & Leadership
The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Health Secretary Aslam Ghauri and Maj. Gen. Asadur Rehman Cheema (DG SIFC). Their presence underscored the state’s commitment to utilizing the SIFC framework to streamline medical investments.
During the event, Prof. Dr. Mazhar Nizam was sworn in as the new President of PAPS. The conference also honored the “founding fathers” of Pakistani plastic surgery, including Prof. Mamoon Rasheed and Prof. Moazzam Nazir Tarar, for their lifelong contributions to the field.
Telemedicine: Bridging the Healthcare Gap
Parallel to the advancements in surgery, Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal met with the Sehat Kahani team to review a highly successful three-month telemedicine pilot program.Dr. Sara Saeed Khurram, CEO of Sehat Kahani, briefed the Minister on the integration of digital health across Basic Health Units (BHUs) in Islamabad and dispensaries in Karachi. The impact was immediate and measurable.
The Road Ahead
The conclusion of the PAPS conference and the expansion of telemedicine initiatives signal a dual-track strategy for Pakistan: attracting international patients for specialized procedures while digitizing local healthcare for the masses.By combining the administrative weight of the SIFC with the technical excellence of the medical community, Pakistan is no longer just a participant in the global surgical landscape—it is becoming a leader.
