Punjab Gears Up for Global Market: CM Maryam Nawaz Greenlights Major Livestock Export Deal

LAHORE — In a landmark move aimed at revitalizing the provincial economy and empowering rural communities, the Punjab government has officially entered into a multi-institutional agreement to export one million livestock and processed meat.

The Memorandum of Understanding‎(MoU), signed on Saturday during a video-link meeting presided over by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, partners the provincial government with seven key institutions, including the prominent Chinese firm, Global Meat Company.

Key Infrastructure: The Chinese Partnership‎

A central component of this agreement is the modernization of meat processing. China’s Global Meat Company is set to collaborate with the state-owned Punjab Agriculture and Meat Company (PAMCO) to install a specialized boiler unit.‎

  • Export-Ready Meat: The unit will focus on preparing boiled meat on a mass scale to meet international health and safety standards.
  • Fattening Programs: The initiative has set ambitious targets to prepare animals for the global market:
  • 300,000 buffaloes and cows.‎
  • 300,000 sheep and goats.

An additional 100,000 goats and sheep specifically raised for high-end export.‎Revolutionizing Veterinary Care.To ensure the health of the livestock and the quality of the exports, CM Maryam Nawaz announced a massive overhaul of veterinary services across Punjab.‎

  • Tehsil-Level Hospitals: State-of-the-art veterinary hospitals will be established in every tehsil of the province.
  • Mobile Dispensaries: To reach farmers in remote areas, four mobile veterinary dispensaries will be deployed per tehsil, providing “door-to-door” treatment.
  • Digital Tracking: In a bid to meet strict international traceability requirements, two million animals will be tagged, ensuring a transparent supply chain for foreign buyers.‎

Empowerment and Modernization

The project goes beyond trade, focusing heavily on social welfare and technological advancement. For the first time in the province’s history, the government is introducing large-scale mechanization of the livestock sector, offering a 60% subsidy on modern farming machinery.‎

‎”We are not just exporting meat; we are building a sustainable ecosystem for our rural population,” the meeting was briefed.‎The Chief Minister also emphasized support for vulnerable groups:‎

  1. Rural Women: The quota for free livestock provided to rural women has been doubled.
  2. South Punjab Initiative: Approximately 9,255 animals will be distributed specifically to widowed and divorced women across 12 districts in South Punjab, providing them with a direct means of livelihood.

Economic Outlook

By bridging the gap between local farmers and international markets—specifically China—the Punjab government aims to turn the livestock sector into a primary driver of foreign exchange. With the combination of Chinese processing technology and local veterinary reforms, Punjab is positioning itself as a high-standard meat hub for the region.
