Don’t Delay: NADRA Warns of Penalties and Service Blocks for Expired CNICs
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a stern advisory to citizens; renew your identity documents now or face “additional fees and penalties” starting the next fiscal year.
While NADRA has historically avoided imposing late fees to facilitate the public, the authority warned that this leniency may end after June if renewal trends do not improve.

An expired National Identity Card (CNIC) is more than just a piece of plastic; it is the key to your digital and financial life. Failing to renew it can lead to the suspension of:

The Numbers: A Growing Backlog
The scale of expired documentation in Pakistan is significant. Currently, over 27.4 million national identity cards have expired, along with 2.3 million overseas cards and more than 11 million child registration certificates.
Particularly concerning is the status of mobile connectivity. Over 8.1 million SIMs are active against 4.5 million expired cards. Shockingly, more than 223,000 of these cards have been expired for over a decade without any renewal attempt
Urgent Directives for Citizens
NADRA and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have outlined specific steps to avoid service disruptions:
•Renew Early: Adult citizens must renew their CNICs before the expiry date printed on the card.
•First-Time ID: Parents are urged to ensure children who have reached the age of 18 obtain their first National Identity Card immediately.
•Handle Deceased Records: SIMs registered under the names of deceased relatives must be transferred to the CNIC of the current user to avoid being blocked.
•Pro Tip: Check your phone for SMS alerts from NADRA. The authority has already begun sending reminders to citizens and parents of newly eligible adults.
